ITI URGES SENATE TO FINISH COMPREHENSIVE
IMMIGRATION LEGISLATION
America’s Leadership of Innovation Economy at Risk,
ITI Warns
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Information
Technology Industry Council (ITI) Senior Vice President of Government Relations
Ralph Hellmann today urged the Senate to complete work on the Comprehensive
Immigration Reform Act (S. 1348). Noting progress in Senate negotiations
on provisions critical to the high tech industry, Hellmann warned that Senate
delay could compromise America’s leadership in the global innovation
economy.
“We are encouraged by the steady and substantive progress in Senate
negotiations on the bill, especially work on an amendment that would address
serious employment-based green card and H-1B visa shortages, ” Hellmann
said. “The Senate is too close to halt this process. The
highly skilled labor problem has reached a crisis level for the high tech industry
and must be addressed now.”
“At stake in this debate is the ability of American companies to compete
for the world's leading scientists and engineers. The efforts of Senators Cantwell,
Kyl, Cornyn and Specter represent real progress for the high tech industry. Their
bipartisan work could provide the necessary tools to help maintain our competitive
and technological edge in an increasingly competitive global economy.
“ITI remains committed to helping the Senate process and urges the Senate
to get S. 1348 over the finish line.”
