ITI has an unparallel reputation for turning thought leadership into tangible action for its members. ITI members can participate in over 15 ITI committees that represent the industry and its priorities in domestic and global venues.
ITI has served the high tech industry longer than any other trade association, beginning in 1916 when it was founded in Chicago, Illinois as the National Association of Office Appliance Manufacturers.
ITI's members are global leaders in innovation--from all areas of the ICT sector including hardware, services, and software--the products our members create are the face of global economic growth and the heart and soul of improving peoples' lives.
Assuring the appropriate recycling of obsolete electronic devices is an important public policy goal for ITI's Environmental Leadership Council (ELC). ELC companies have pioneered product stewardship programs in the United States and across the globe to support the safe and appropriate re-use and recycling of used electronics products. Through a combination of direct corporate efforts and innovative partnerships, ITI member companies have been involved in the proper recovery and management of well over two billion pounds of used electronics products. In addition, ITI member companies use significant quantities of recycled materials, including glass, metals and plastics, in new generations of their products, thus creating demand that helps sustain markets for these materials.
The Environmental Leadership Council is involved with electronics recycling issues at the local, state, national, and international levels. We emphasize the importance of consistent requirements in order to facilitate compliance, establish a level playing field and avoid a patchwork of costly and inconsistent requirements. Most importantly, we advocate for a system under which all major stakeholders - manufacturers, retailers, government, non-governmental organizations and recyclers - combine efforts to develop a cost-effective recycling infrastructure that is convenient for the residential consumer.
