Environment & Sustainability

From ITI's early engagement and support of the U.S. Energy Star® program, to advancements in product stewardship and design, ITI and its members have set the tone for industry leadership in energy efficiency and environmental performance.

Our member companies have long been leaders in sustainability: many exceed the requirements on environmental design and energy efficiency, and lead the way in product stewardship efforts. As a result, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the Financial Times Sustainability Index, and the Global 100 have consistently recognized numerous ITI members for their concrete environmental and sustainability achievements.

In addition, Newsweek recently issued its 2010 Green Rankings of America’s 500 largest corporations, based on their overall environmental performance, policies, and reputation. 9 of the top 13 companies and 14 of the top 40 are members of either ITI or of ITI’s Environmental Leadership Council and overall the high tech sector has strong representation throughout the Global 500.

ITI's Environment & Sustainability engages directly with ITI members on Energy issues, but also hosts two other initiatives, The Environmental Leadership Council (ELC) and The Digital Energy Solutions Campaign (DESC).

Energy
Clean energy and energy efficiency represent crucial challenges and opportunities alike for the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) industry.

ITI actively promotes government policies that will help the ICT sector achieve or surpass these contribution and create U.S. jobs.  ITI believes the governmental role in encouraging ICT-enabled sustainable economic growth and clean energy innovation should include policies that promote smart technologies and energy efficiency, green ICT procurement, innovation funding, broadband access, global collaboration and trade that respect IP rights, and consumer empowerment.

In terms of challenges, the ICT industry is faced with a growing global array of costly and inconsistent laws, regulations and standards that threaten market access by forcing manufacturers to design different products for different regions.  Through engagement with U.S. and international jurisdictions, and its lead role in public-private partnerships such as the U.S. Government's ENERGY STAR® program, ITI promotes consistency among laws and regulations that mandate energy efficiency through product design requirements.

The Environmental Leadership Council
The Environmental Leadership Council (ELC) at ITI represents roughly 70 of the principal manufacturers of information technology equipment, wireless and consumer electronics devices, and other electronic and high-tech products and systems.

Through the ELC members engage in issues around materials restrictions, electronics recycling and environmentally preferable purchasing. For more information about these issues and the ELC’s work, click here.

DESC
The Digital Energy Solutions Campaign (DESC) brings together information and communications technology (ICT) companies and associations, non-governmental organizations, customers and other stakeholders who recognize the enabling role that ICT plays in improving our environment and driving long-term economic growth.
