The Environmental Leadership Council (ELC) at ITI represents almost 70 of the principal manufacturers of information technology equipment, wireless and consumer electronics devices, and other electronic and high-tech products and systems.
A new online community that brings together industry officials, affiliated trade groups, non-governmental organizations and consumers to share best practices and ideas on how information and communications technology (ICT) can further the nation’s environmental and energy goals.
ITI’s High Tech Industry Blueprint highlights the education initiatives that ICT member companies are spearheading and funding to meet the needs of America’s 21st century workforce.
Advocating for legislation that would give the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) authority to hold voluntary incentive auctions, as called for in the FCC’s March 2010 National Broadband Plan (NBP) and President Obama’s June 2010 spectrum memo.
ITI's Environmental Leadership Council (the ELC) is the preeminent industry voice for key domestic environmental policy. ELC members have access to domestic advocacy and compliance assistance in the areas of electronics recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing and materials selection. The ELC is a separate membership within the Information Technology Industry Council's Environment & Sustainability division that allows companies to engage in certain domestic, product-related environmental issues without joining ITI. The Environmental Leadership Council (ELC) at ITI represents roughly 70 of the principal manufacturers of information technology equipment, wireless and consumer electronics devices, and other electronic and high-tech products and systems.
Electronics Recycling
Members of ITI have taken great strides to improve the end of life management of their products. ITI is involved with electronics recycling issues at the local, state, national, and international levels. We emphasize the importance of consistent requirements in order to facilitate compliance, establish a level playing field and avoid a patchwork of costly and inconsistent requirements. Most importantly, we advocate for electronics recycling solutions that are based on shared responsibility, under which all major stakeholders - manufacturers, government, non-governmental organizations, recyclers, businesses and consumers - work together to ensure the success of a recycling program.
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
The purchase of environmentally preferable products provides a market reward and recognition to companies whose dedication and commitment to sustainability has yielded concrete environmental and energy efficiency achievements. Through ITI's advocacy effort, members champion programs that promote environmentally preferable purchasing and rely on established and verifiable metrics. These programs not only stimulate and reward the creation of greener products, they green the entire product lifecycle from design to reuse and recycling.
Materials Selection
ITI leads industry engagement on product design issues, such as materials restriction laws and design mandates. Our policy is to develop laws and regulations based on sound scientific assessments of the properties of substances, the risks of relevant exposures and the environmental and long-term performance characteristics of potential substitutes. ITI also promotes market-based incentives for green design and programs that reward environmentally preferable design initiatives.
