India Monday suspended its controversial "Buy India" policy.

"The entire policy on Providing Preference to Domestically Manufactured Electronic Goods [PMA Policy] will be revisited and reviewed," read a statement on the prime minister's website.

The decision was made after the Prime Minister's Office met with representatives of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, known by its acronym as Deity, and the Department of Telecommunications, the two agencies that formulated the policy.

The statement said that Deity would submit a revised policy to the cabinet within four weeks.
