ITI applauds the action taken today by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the 5 gigahertz (GHz) and AWS-3 proceedings.  What is readily apparent to those working on spectrum policy in D.C., as well as consumers who are relying increasingly on internet-connected mobile devices, is that to meet this growing demand we must make more spectrum available for mobile broadband use.

By working with Congress, others in the federal government, and the private sector, the FCC's adoption of rules in the AWS proceeding will make 65 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum available to service providers to help meet consumer demand for mobile broadband use.  This is an important step in stakeholders collaborating to ensure this valuable resource is used efficiently.  Likewise, today's action on 5 GHz will continue to unlock consumer benefits from technology companies who are working to provide next generation Wi-Fi in that band.  It is also encouraging that the FCC can still make additional spectrum available for next generation Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz band when all stakeholders commit to constructively engaging to find technical solutions which will allow that to happen.  ITI looks forward to working with the FCC and other stakeholders to facilitate additional unlicensed access in the 5 GHz band.

ITI thanks FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, his fellow commissioners, those in Congress who have worked on these issues, and other partners across the federal government, whose collaboration and partnership allowed movement on these two items.
