ITI applauds the House of Representatives for its unanimous show of support for a free and open Internet that has, at its core, a voluntary, multi-stakeholder governance model.  The overwhelming support in the House and Senate is a critical demonstration of the United States’ commitment to the principles that have driven innovation and a vibrant online ecosystem -- voluntary standards developed through stakeholder collaboration and creative approaches adapted at the speed of imagination and not hindered by government interference. These principles are essential if entrepreneurs and innovators around the world are to gain from the economic development benefits the Internet continues to offer.

ITI appreciates the leadership of Senators Rubio and McCaskill on S. Con. Res. 50, and Representatives Bono Mack, Upton, Waxman, Walden, and Eshoo for spearheading a similar effort in the House.

With today’s vote, the United States Congress has expressed support for maintaining an Internet governance model free of onerous government  interference or influence.  This action is critical, as representatives from our government and the American business community are working to protect these same principles at the World Conference on International Telecommunications hosted by the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union.  Protecting the multi-stakeholder governance process will ensure a thriving internet ecosystem that continues to drive innovation, economic growth, and opportunity.
