WASHINGTON – The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), the global voice of the tech sector, issued the following statement from President and CEO Dean Garfield in response to today’s announcement of the Congressional Black Caucus’ CBC TECH 2020 initiative, which aims to increase the number of African Americans in the tech sector.

“The tech sector is committed to building a more inclusive 21st century economy, and that includes making our own workforce more inclusive. Diverse opinions, experiences and perspectives not only improve our products and services, but also spark the innovative spirit that we are known for worldwide. We are reviewing the proposals and initiatives outlined in today’s announcement and will work with the Congressional Black Caucus towards our shared goal of increasing the presence of African Americans working in all levels of our sector. As we work to meet this challenge we need and appreciate partners like the CBC whose leadership can unite stakeholders in this effort.”

Garfield was the first leader of a tech advocacy group to speak on the tech industry’s efforts to embrace diversity. ITI is also one of the only tech advocacy groups to join along with tech companies in disclosing their workforce diversity data.
