WASHINGTON – The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), the global voice of the tech sector, released the following statement today from Senior Vice President for Government Affairs Andy Halataei after the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the Defend Trade Secrets Act (S. 1890), legislation creating a federal civil remedy for trade secret theft:

"In the digital age it has become easier for people to steal trade secrets, whether through organized espionage or common criminal behavior," Halataei said. “Stealing trade secrets is not a victimless crime. It robs our companies of the major investments they are making in research and development to launch new products and grow our economy. And, as multi-national companies doing business globally, trade secret misappropriation affects our competitiveness worldwide. We appreciate the Senate Judiciary Committee taking action to address this problem and encourage lawmakers to pass this legislation to provide the same protection to trade secrets as current law provides for all other forms of intellectual property."
