Washington, D.C. – January 21, 2010 – Secretary Hillary Clinton today delivered a major policy address on Internet freedom at the Newseum in Washington, DC.  The high-tech sector welcomes the Secretary’s and the U.S. government’s active engagement on solutions for preserving the integrity of the Internet, ensuring global networks are free, secure and reliable.

“The tech sector is at the forefront of developing the tools that enhance communication, education, economic opportunity, and the exchange of ideas,” said Dean Garfield, President and CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI). “We have long recognized our responsibility to respect and protect privacy and freedom of expression on the Internet.”

Due in large part to the success of the Internet, the high-tech sector has been on the forefront of American jobs creation, innovation, and workforce training.  Garfield added, “The information and communications technology (ICT) industry stands ready to work with the State Department, other U.S. government agencies, other sectors, as well as governments around the world to ensure ICT innovations continue to foster transparency, economic growth and the free and secure flow of information.”

ITI member companies are leaders in developing and expanding the World Wide Web.  The Internet has transformed every aspect of our lives from how we work to how we play.  It has enabled people to communicate, in real time, with colleagues, family and friends in all corners of the world.
