BRUSSELS -- ITI, the global voice of the tech sector, released the following statement welcoming the announcement that the European Union (EU) has requested consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on India’s tariffs on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) products:

“We applaud the EU for taking this important step to ensure that India adheres to its WTO commitments,” said Josh Kallmer, ITI’s Executive Vice President of Policy. “For years, India has increased tariffs on several ICT products that it agreed to allow as duty-free, creating uncertainty and restricting the market for global businesses. The WTO’s rules on tariffs form the backbone for global trade in goods, and the EU’s actions to defend the world trading system and champion a low-tariff trading environment for business are critical to ensure a fair outcome that creates predictability and reinforces the global, rules-based trading system.”
