I joined a conversation this week (on Feb 26) called the “GreenGov Dialogue on Demand Response” that was hosted by the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). It brought together leaders from government, the private sector, non-profits and academia to identify opportunities to reduce our nation’s periods of peak energy demand, promote a more stable electric grid, and help the Federal Government [...]

The Subcommittee on Energy and Power held its Hearing Tuesday on "American Energy Security and Innovation: An Assessment of Private-Sector Successes and Opportunities in Energy Efficient Technologies." The staff background memo, the witness list, written testimony and other info is here. I only caught portions, as the Hearing lasted 4 hours, and was held concurrently with the CEQ-hosted GreenGov Dialogue [...]

The reaction from Democratic and Republican Members of Congress to Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address and Republican response show the genuine opportunity for the development of a next-generation energy strategy that can jumpstart U.S. job creation and economic growth. And the technology sector can be a leader in this effort, utilizing innovative products that boost efficiency and productivity [...]

Back in 2005, ITI worked with Reps. Mike Rogers, R-Mich. and Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., on the introduction and then enactment during the 109th Congress of a small bill (HR 5646) that focused on better understanding data center energy efficiency. We followed that up in 2007 by helping to draft and then supporting the successful Eshoo/Rogers amendment that became Section 453 of the Energy Independence and [...]

The U.S. National Broadband Plan famously asserted that “broadband and advanced communications infrastructure will play an important role in achieving [the] national goals of energy independence and efficiency.” Now, a study released by the Global eSustainability Initiative (GeSI) offers new calculations on the size of the opportunity for using broadband and IT to maximize the efficiency with which [...]

On Friday, I had the great pleasure of sitting in on the congressional briefing on “Data Center Energy Efficiency” that ITI hosted with Representative Anna Eshoo (D-Ca). As ITI’s Dean Garfield noted in introducing her, Representative Eshoo “was doing data center efficiency before data centers were cool.” Indeed, Eshoo and ITI worked on the 2005 bill that she and Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Mi) [...]

DESSC is proud of all of our member’s green efforts, but today we want to applaud the six DESSC members that made it onto Newsweek’s 2012 Greenest American Companies list. Now in its fourth year, these rankings are compiled after analysis by multiple environmental research organizations. CA Technologies cut back on commuting and pollution by allowing 30 percent of its workforce to work from home. [...]

There’s an app for that. Thanks in part to the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Apps for Energy” contest, smartphone and tablets have hundreds of applications to help monitor, control, and boost energy efficiency. These apps may be utilized by individual devices, around the home, and even in commercial buildings to assist in lowering energy bills and meeting efficiency standards. These innovative and [...]

ITI members received high marks on the latest environmental measure of publicly traded companies, holding six of the top ten slots on the ranking of the greenest U.S. companies, according to Newsweek’s fourth annual Green Company Rankings list that came out on Monday. IBM topped the U.S. chart for the second year in a row, and also ranked number 4 among 500 global companies. Among U.S. companies, [...]

Back in the day – in 1935 to be exact – the DuPont company introduced an advertising slogan that captured the spirit of the age: “Better Things for Better Living . . . Through Chemistry.” If we were to update this slogan we might now say, “Better Things for Better Living . . . Through Data.” Better living through data is a theme for our time, whether its IBM’s “Let’s build a smarter planet,” the [...]
